Gail Lew is an author, editor, arranger, piano teacher, clinician, and nationally-respected leader in the field of piano pedagogy. She is an independent studio teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area with studios in Castro Valley and Pleasanton. Gail is the former editor of the California Music Teacher magazine, serves as a New Music Reviewer for MTAC branches, is a contributing editor for the American Music Teacher magazine, is a frequent contributor to Clavier Companion magazine, and is the former Chairman of the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy Committee on Independent Music Teachers (Princeton, New Jersey). Gail received her bachelor of music degree in piano performance, master of music degree in music history, and a Lifetime California State Teaching Credential with specialization in music education. Her master’s thesis on the history of piano pedagogy in the twentieth century garnered a coveted California State University award for best master’s thesis. In 2011 she won first place for her pedagogy research paper at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy in Chicago.
Highlights of her 30-year career in music include tenure as senior piano editor for Kjos Music and director of keyboard publications for Warner Bros. Music, during which time she served as editor for the landmark text Practical Piano Pedagogy. Gail conducts yearly workshops in the United States including presentations at the Music Teachers National Association Convention, many state conventions, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. In addition to a busy teaching schedule, Gail judges piano competitions at state, national, and international events including MTAC Certificate of Merit and National Guild Auditions. In 2011, she was selected to judge at MusiQuest in Pune, India. In 2016 she taught master classes and judged national piano exams throughout the People’s Republic of China. Gail continues to train students who are consistently selected for local, state, and national honors.
